October 11th - 15th will be a busy one. We will be completing our NECAP testing Monday through Friday. Please have your 5th grader get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast. That will prepare them to perform to the best of their ability. Also, parent conference meetings will be happening over the next week and a half. I am looking forward to meeting with each family. Fifth graders are welcome to come to help lead the discussion of their performance in school.October 20 -22 will be no school days for students. The 20th will be parent conference, and the 21st and 22nd are vacation days.
Grading in the 5/6 House
We use the 3-2-1 System:
3 - Means the student understands the skill or concept and can work independently consistently.
2 - Means the student is still learning a concept, still needs help sometimes.
1 - Means the student has very little or no understanding of a concept.
**Some assignments that students hand in will not receive a score or grade
In the ClassroomCurrently in the 5th grade class is reading NECAP style narratives in order to learn how to make a constructed response. In class we call them Hamburger Paragraphs. We then plan to take those structural paragraph pieces to create a Quality Summery which includes the following:
Introduction: The focus/topic sentence of the piece. As well as establishing a Hook, title/author, introducing the main character, and the main character's problem in the story. Body: Three paragraphs that discuss the details and elboration. A retelling or creating of important information that moves the story along and shows action while using Transition Words between our sentences to create one flowing piece. Using events that we ourselves find interesting is limited. Conclusion: Recapping the topic sentence while providing a few details that the body of the piece mentioned. Possibly retelling the main character's problem, telling the resolution (solution) of the problem if there is one, and providing the moral / lesson learned through reading the piece. _______________________________
